The Book of Life - 08/10 - Crítica de Javier Madariaga, Publicado en (Inglés)
'Live Life'
When I heard that Gustavo Santaolalla was scoring 'The Book of Life' I thought it was going to be a strange but effective score, because the composer is known for his very acoustic and almost folklorical scores. Though I haven´t heard the Score album itself,I have to say that the Soundtrack Album surprised me. I personally thought that the songs were going to be pop or not related with the rich culture of mexicans but it's indeed the oppsite.

Opening with 'Live life', an extraordinary song by the latin siblings/duo Jesse & Joy, the album takes us directly to that latin feeling that make our body move and orders our feet to dance. the song is rich, moving, joyful and it's surprising the ability of the latin duo to sound as english-speaking singers without loosing the latin spicy tone.
If you were almost dancing with the first track, the second one 'The Apology Song' will instantly make you stand up and start moving your hips at the rythim of this marvelous 'a la-mexicana' song, that reminds to the song of the Mariachi.
Followed by 'No Matter Where You Are' the album totally catches your attention and this third track is one of the only three 'american-style' songs of the album (along with Mas and Just Friends).
The addition of old song like 'Cielito Lindo' or 'Can´t Help falling in love' are just amazing and the transformation of 'Do you Think I'm Sexy' to a Ranchera is simply celestial.
The only two tracks dedicated partially for the score composer are well presented, this new rendition to Morricone's Ectasy of Gold is beautiful, the addition of the drums and the final mexican-hit is marvelous. The Only original score track 'Visiting Mother' is gentle and sweet, like when you take a cup of hot-chocolate.
Nothing bad to this album except maybe the track 'Mas' by Kinky that can be found boring afer so much energy in the beginning and a little out of the style of the music.
An extraordinary and enjoyable soundtrack and a must hear if you're feeling a little blue( specially Live Life)
