Recorded in 1960 at the already renowned Abbey Road Studios, this recording captures the then current cast of composer Lionel Bart's hugely successful new musical, Oliver! A show which had been performed to ecstatic West End audiences at London's the New Theatre that same year. Bart, arguably a godfather of the modern pop song, had lovingly and masterly fused the authentic sound of London music hall and Victorian variety theatre with his astute pop sensibilities. The cast on this recording is headed by British film actor Ian Carmichael at the height of his career, coming afresh from filming the classic comedies I'm All Right Jack and School for Scoundrels. What makes this recording extra special is that it marks the vinyl debut of future lead singer of The Small Faces and all round Mod hero, Steve Marriott. Then aged 13, during the shows auditions Marriott had impressed Bart with his obvious developing talent as a singer and was employed to play various roles during his year long stint on the show. Here he is captured in the role he surely was born to play...
