Compiling film themes into a consistently engaging listen has never been easy. Sony has really pulled it off on The Classic Score though, drawing together a genuinely impressive playlist from multiple labels and artists. Its success is in part down to the ear of whoever compiled it, but it's also a fantastic reminder that film music has by no means grown stale while embracing the 21st century. Witness the popular hits: The Phantom Menace's 'Duel of the Fates', Harry Potter, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, American Beauty, Planet of the Apes, Chocolat and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Lest we forget how great the 1990s were, there's Braveheart, Schindler's List, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Dances With Wolves and The Piano. Add perennial classics such as The Last Emperor and The Deer Hunter's 'Cavatina', and any soundtrack collector will admit this is the best collection of themes there's been in a long time. Noticeable by its absence is Titanic, which conclusively proves these two discs were extremely cleverly and considerately compiled.--Paul Tonks
