The attractive idea of threading together Bernstein's New York theatre and film music hasn't been attempted before except in compilations, but in the event this selection is only partially successful. The performances are essentially light-weight with Donna Murphy's smoky rendition of the blues 'Ain't Got No Tears Left' from On the Town stealing the show. Dawn Upshaw brings her distinctive voice to 'Lonely Town' but she is let down by her partner Richard Muenz in 'One Hand, One Heart' as Blazer is by the miscasting of Mandy Patinkin as her sailor partner in 'Come Up to My Place.' Aura McDonald has since gone on to record a more seductive 'A Little Bit in Love' on Simon Rattle's EMI recording of Wonderful Town, but yet another bit of miscasting with Patinkin leaves her Maria in the balcony scene from West Side Story beleaguered. Orchestrations are original ones save for Patinkin's solo 'Some Other Time' where the vocal lines are fleshed out instrumentally.
