In just short of a decade's time the Orange Mountain Music label has managed to release an impressive number of discs of Philip Glass' music, some 63 issues in all. With The Orange Mountain Music Philip Glass Sampler the label hopes to acquaint the listener with a taste of the range of offerings that it has, and that's a tall order, given the wide range of operas, film scores, concert pieces, and more intimate kinds of musical territory that this label has covered within the locus of Glass' work. Any listener who has the idea that Glass is a one-note talent should behold the contents of this CD, including everything from saxophone quartets to piano music to film music and beyond in 21 extracts ranging in length from six and a half minutes to just over one. All of the extracts are complete movements; the act of curating such a high-quality collection from a wide array of sources is in itself impressive; however, producers Don Christensen and Richard Guerin have managed to sequence this sampler in a way that its tracks all feed into one another. That's going far and above the usual requirements for just a sampler, but it is an example of the great care that these producers take with everything that appears under the Orange Mountain Music banner. So feel free to sample without prejudice or fear, and chances are the listener will find at least one or two things out of the OMM catalog they would prefer to own whole, which of course is the whole purpose behind a sampler disc anyway. The Orange Mountain Music Philip Glass Sampler is definitely enjoyable and provides a wealth of options to choose from in OMM's greater catalog.
