Jule Styne's career didn't end on a high note, his last Broadway production (The Red Shoes) closing after hardly a week, but you'd scarcely know any of that (or much else) from this enjoyable but not terribly profound assembly of performances dating between the 1940s and the 1960s, when he had successes the caliber of Gypsy, Bells Are Ringing, Funny Girl, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The featured performers range from Guy Mitchell ('It's Been a Long, Long Time') to Sarah Vaughan ('You Say You Care'). There isn't a note here that any serious pop music devotee of the pre-rock & roll era could object to, but the set also misses the chance to sell itself with some observations about the songwriter himself. There are also some unusual personnel here by the standards of modern performing sensibilities, such as Ethel Merman and Jack Klugman ('Together, Wherever We Go,' from the cast album of Gypsy), Sidney Chaplin and Judy Holliday ('Long Before I Knew You'), and Pearl Bailey paired with Tony Pastor ('It's a Great Feeling,' 'Mamie Is Mimi'). Carol Channing's version of 'Just a Little Girl From Little Rock' may be an acquired taste, and Eric Brotherson's version of 'We're Just a Kiss Apart,' in an operetta style, hardly fits with a lot of the rest here, but otherwise this is a pretty well unified collection of pop material, even reaching out a bit to the likes of R&B singer Roy Hamilton ('I'll Walk Alone,' 'How Do You Speak to an Angel').
