Björn, a thief from Germany, is on the run from the European police. Masquerading as a Swedish literature professor, he comes to Havana with the plan for a spectacular jewel heist at a local museum.

He ends up with more than he bargained for when he falls for the daughter of a retired police officer and is practically adopted by her family.

Immersed in the colourful sights and sounds of Havana, the seemingly innocent tourist must 'play the Swede', which is a Cuban colloquialism which means to play innocent, and even give an impromptu lecture on Pippi Longstocking before he can commit the near-perfect crime. But Björn's double life could cost him the woman he loves, as he can't succeed without throwing her father off his guard.

After swiping the treasure, he hurries to the airport to catch a flight out of the country, the former police detective hot on his trail. With his freedom at stake, Björn has a difficult decision to make: Which jewel should he choose? The one that he has just stolen or the one who has stolen his heart?

EDESIO ALEJANDRO'S musical repertoire knows no bounds. Running the gamut from the African and European roots of Cuban folk music to electronic experimental music, no realm of sound remains uncharted for him. It must also be mentioned that he has received several awards at international festivals for his work in the area as composer of film music for such soundtracks as La Vida es silbar (1998) and Tropicanita (1998).

For the music to IT HAPPENED IN HAVANA he turns to the authentic sounds of the vieja trova and sonmusic (the predecessors of the salsa). His pieces are interpreted by La Orquesta Mágica de La Habana with lyrics to the songs written by the director Daniel Diaz Torres. La Orquesta Mágica de La Habana is a collection of members of the cream of the crop of Cuban sonmusic and what they produce definitely does justice to the 'magic' referred to in the group's name. The author Miguel Mejides enthusiastically writes about them: 'God has put the key to happiness into our hands. Hearing the Orquesta Mágica breaks open the doors of heaven.'
