Premiere of twin original 20th Century Fox soundtracks for Neil Simon movies directed by Herbert Ross. MAX DUGAN RETURNS stars Marsha Mason, Jason Robards, Donald Sutherland, takes note as debuts of Matthew Broderick, Kiefer Sutherland. David Shire anchors with agile melody over sturdy rhythm that propels, quickly commands. Flexible idea works throughout score in various guises, finally becomes rousing curtain closer at finale. (Dynamic piece later became popular in live concerts done by composer.) Shire balances with 'old time' melody, adds element of nostalgia to score. I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES turns Walter Matthau, Ann-Margret, Dinah Manoff loose in L.A. for stab in movies. Marvin Hamlisch brings brief, sentimental score along for support, anchors with pretty melody written by himself with Carol Bayer Sager. Both scores are presented in stereo from pristine elements stored in Fox vaults. Notes by Julie Kirgo, comments from David Shire, full musician rosters, colorful graphics complete tuneful package. Intrada Special Collection release limited to just 1200 copies.
