Delerue opens, closes with gently sunny melody for flute over strings, harp. In between are haunting themes for piano, strings plus ideas using composer's trademark melancholy string gift. In contrast, 'The Loss' offers rolling tune for cellos over guitar, soft drums in smooth quasi-lounge guise. Richard Rodney Bennett joins director Boris Sagal in mystery finding SHERLOCK HOLMES IN NEW YORK, starring Roger Moore, John Huston, Patrick Macnee, Winning tale inspires Bennett to support with symphonic work both rollicking, sinister. Main theme plays as swirling, classical-ish rondo for full orchestra. Bennett also offers unusally rich solo writing for cello, violin ('Irene') plus more complex ideas for mystery, evil sequences. Both scores presented in stereo from original master elements. Elegant packaging, informative liner notes from Julie Kirgo round out production. Georges Delerue conducts his score, Leonard Rosenman conducts Bennett score. Special Collection CD limited to 1200 copies.
